Tips to Reduce Your Medication Costs
Prescription medication costs are higher in the U.S. than anywhere else in the world. This is because the U.S. does not regulate medication costs. While every industrialized country has some form of price control on patented medication, the U.S. does not. Millions of people in America are struggling to pay for their prescription drugs. Too often people have to choose between putting food on their tables and taking their medication. Our goal at Medicationcoupons.com is to help people save money on medication. And in this newsletter, we will show you different ways that you can reduce your medication expenses. Please be sure to discuss your options with your doctor prior to taking any of the recommendations mentioned in this article.
Generics- A great way to save money on your medication is to ask your doctor to write you a prescription for a generic alternative. On the average, generic medications are 30%-80% cheaper than brand name medications. For some reason, people believe that generic medications are far less superior and effective than brand name medications. This is simply not true. Although generic medications may look different, the quality is the same and they are equally as safe as brand name medications according to the FDA (http://www.fda.gov/Drugs/ResourcesForYou/Consumers/BuyingUsingMedicineSafely/UnderstandingGenericDrugs/ucm144456.htm). Both generic and brand medications contain the same amount of active ingredients. Generic medications are approved by the FDA. The FDA requires that all generic drugs be the same as brand name drugs in dosage, strength, the way it’s taken, the way it works and the health conditions it treats. Rest assured, if you choose to buy generic, they are just as safe and effective as taking brand drugs and much more cost effective.
Pill Splitting- Pill splitting has become increasingly popular. The term pill splitting refers to a doctor writing a prescription for double the dosage of a medication, and then the patient splits the pill in half. The results are the same cost, but double the quantity. Not all pills can be split, so be sure to double check with your doctor before splitting them yourself. When splitting pills, make sure you use a pill splitter and not a knife. Pill splitters are much more accurate.
Higher dosage taken less often- Another alternative would be to ask your doctor they if can prescribe a higher dosage pill that you could take less often. Example- if you normally take 2 x 40 mg pills a day, perhaps you could take 1 x 80 mg pill a day.
Medication Samples- Don’t ever leave your doctor’s office without asking if he or she has samples of the medication he or she just prescribed you. Doctors typically do have a variety of medication samples provided by their pharmaceutical reps. Most will be more than happy to help their patients save money any way they can.
Medication Coupons- Medication coupons are also a great way to save money on the cost of your medication. Many drug manufacturers offer savings coupons, rebates, free trial offers, free samples and co-pay cards for their medications; this includes both prescription and over the counter medications. Medicationcoupons.com constantly scours the web looking for these offers and then compiles them for consumers. In fact, we offer the most extensive database of free medication coupons online. Patient Assistance Programs- Do you know about patient assistance programs? Many Pharmaceutical companies offer free or deeply discounted prescription medication to uninsured and underinsured patients. Although certain eligibility criteria must be met in order to qualify for a patient assistance program, millions of dollars worth of prescription medication are given away annually through patient assistance programs. FreeMedPrograms.com is a website that provides people with the necessary information they will need to apply for patient assistance.

Heart Disease Awareness
Coronary heart disease is the number one killer of Americans today. For that reason, February has been deemed American Heart Month. It’s time to bring awareness to this disease and educate people on what they can do to prevent heart disease from developing. Making positive, healthy changes to your life can decrease your chances of becoming a statistic.
Heart disease is a term that includes many different diseases that affect your heart. The most common type of heart disease is coronary heart disease, or hardening of the arteries. This is caused by a buildup of plaque inside the coronary arteries. There are many other types of heart disease, but Coronary heart disease is the one that most often results in a heart attack. Although heart disease symptoms vary according to which type of heart disease you have, there are some specific signs that indicate you may be experiencing a heart attack:
- squeezing sensation, pressure or pain in the chest
- pain/ discomfort in one or both arms
- pain in back, jaw, neck or stomach
- shortness of breath
- nausea and lightheadedness
There are many risk factors that can lead to heart disease. The more risk factors you have, the greater your chances are of developing heart disease. Below is a list of common risk factors:
- Diabetes
- Smoking
- Obesity/ over weight
- Stress
- Poor diet
- Age- the older you get, your chances of getting heart disease increases
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- heredity
Many types of heart diseases can be prevented by adding healthy lifestyle changes. There are many lifestyle changes that you can make right now to reduce your risk of developing or delaying heart disease:
- Lose weight- Overweight people are much more prone to developing heart disease. Talk to your doctor about coming up with a weight loss plan that works for you.
- Maintain a healthy weight- If you are overweight, you will need to not only drop the pounds but you will then need to maintain a healthy weight.
- Eat right- as with anyone that is trying to lose weight, you have to do it the healthy way. You will need to eat a diet that is low in trans fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, salt and sugar. You will need to add more fruits and vegetables to your diet. Make sure you are eating whole grains, beans, lean meats, poultry and fish.
- Don’t smoke- If you don’t smoke, don’t start. If you do smoke, you will need to quit. Talk to your doctor about what would be an effective stop-smoking method for you. Additionally, try to avoid second hand smoke.
- Control your blood pressure- eating healthy foods, exercising, avoiding alcohol and not smoking are all ways that can lower your blood pressure.
- Lower your cholesterol- you can try to lower your cholesterol naturally by adding certain foods and swapping out others. Add more fiber to your diet; oatmeal, fruit veggies and whole grains. Cut back on red meat and add more fish and lean meats. Also, you should start taking an Omega 3 Fish Oil Supplement and exercise more. Exercise has been proven to lower cholesterol.
- Exercise- exercise has been proven to significantly decrease your chances of developing heart disease. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise, 5-6 days a week. Brisk walking is a great place to start.
- Managing stress- stress is a very big contributing factor to one’s health. Find ways that help you de-stress; yoga, exercise and meditation have all been proven to lower stress levels.
By making positive lifestyle changes, you can help to reduce your chances of developing heart disease. February 3rd is National Wear Red Day. In honor of Heart Disease Awareness Month, make sure you proudly wear red to help spread awareness about this deadly disease.

Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is a very common, but serious condition that affects more than 18 million Americans. Sleep apnea is when a person stops and starts breathing many times during sleep. These breathing interruptions can happen up to 100 times a night and can last between 5 seconds and 30 seconds each time. There are three different types of sleep apnea: obstructive, central and mixed. Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common and is a result of your throat muscles intermittently relaxing, which blocks your airways while you are sleeping. Central sleep apnea is caused by your brain not sending the correct signals to your muscles that control breathing. Mixed sleep apnea is a combination of obstructive and central sleep apnea.
Although anyone can develop sleep apnea, it does affect men more often than women. Middle aged, overweight men are at increased risk of developing it. Sleep apnea is more common as you get older; and for women, it’s more common to develop after menopause. Also, it is more common for African Americans, Hispanics and Pacific Islanders to develop sleep apnea. If someone in your family has been diagnosed with sleep apnea, you have a better chance of developing it yourself. Additionally, if you smoke, have high blood pressure and are at risk for heart disease and or stroke, you are more prone to developing sleep apnea.
The most common symptom of sleep apnea is extremely loud snoring. Other sleep apnea symptoms include insomnia, extreme daytime sleepiness, waking up out of breath during the night, waking up gasping or feeling like you’re choking, waking up in the morning with dry mouth or a sore throat, waking up with a headache and getting up frequently to go to the bathroom.
If left untreated, sleep apnea can cause damage to the major organs including the heart, liver and brain. Sleep apnea can also cause an increased risk of high blood pressure, heart failure, stroke, diabetes and arrhythmias. Also, people with sleep apnea are more likely to be involved in a driving accident or work related accident due to their lack of quality sleep.
If you believe you have sleep apnea, you should contact your doctor right away. In some cases, if your sleep apnea is mild, your doctor may simply suggest making some of the following lifestyle changes:
- Lose weight
- Quit smoking
- Eliminate alcohol and sleeping pills
- Don’t eat heavy meals or drink caffeine within a few hours of going to bed
- Try to get on a regular sleep schedule
- Sleep on your back and keep your head propped with a pillow
If you have a more serious case of sleep apnea, treatment will be required. The most effective and most common treatment for sleep apnea is CPAP, which stands for continuous positive airway pressure. This is when the patient wears a special mask to sleep that is hooked up to a machine that sends continuous flow of air to the nostrils. Other sleep apnea treatments include special dental devices that can be fitted by a trained dentist or orthodontist. For severe obstructive sleep apnea, surgery may be necessary.
It is important that people with sleep apnea get the necessary treatment needed for this condition, so they can improve upon their sleep and their overall physical health.
