Coping with Holiday Depression

The holidays are supposed to be a joyful, happy time surrounded by friends and loved ones. Although we may initially look forward to the holidays, when we are actually in the thick of it, it can be a very stressful time. Between spending way too much money on gifts; dealing with family; running to dinners and holiday parties; and eating way too much, it definitely takes its toll. However, for people living with depression, the holidays can be even more difficult to deal with.  

If you find yourself dealing with elevated levels of stress and depression during the holidays, here are a few tips to try to get you through this potentially difficult time: 

Try to get at least 8 hours of sleep per night. When you wake up  feeling  rested, you will feel refreshed and have a more optimistic view.

You may want to donate your time to a charitable event. Helping others can help you think about things outside of yourself. Knowing you are helping those less fortunate than yourself can make you feel good. I am sure you could find a soup kitchen or toy drive that would love to have your assistance. While you’re at it, why not ask your bff to join you. 

Spend time with your friends. Although you may not want to go out initially, once you do and you share good times, you’ll feel better.  Don’t over indulge on food or spirits. Eat healthy, get plenty of exercise and drink in moderation. You’ll feel a lot less guilty if you do.

Since money can be a very stressful thing, maybe you want to discuss with your family and friends not to exchange gifts this year. Agree to share quality time instead. Let’s face it, this would be beneficial for everyone involved.
