The Many Health Benefits of Sleep

The Many Health Benefits of Sleep

Health Benefits of Sleep

After a long day that consists of waking up early, working full time, and taking care of the kids and home, I’m thoroughly exhausted. All I want to do is crawl into bed and wake up rested in the morning. I am someone who is very scheduled in all aspects of my life including eating meals, exercising and especially with my sleeping habits. I go to bed about the same time every night. My sleep routine never includes watching tv from bed. I usually get between 7 and 8 hours of sleep every night. But for some of you out there, and you know who you are, you fight sleep every step of the way.

More than just waking up feeling rested, getting adequate amounts of sleep is extremely beneficial to our overall health. Although the amount of sleep that one needs varies between age groups and individuals, if you feel drowsy during the day, you are probably not getting enough sleep. Below is a list of ways that sleep can benefit us; and it may just make you hit the hay earlier.

  • Live longer- Getting too much sleep or too little sleep can have a direct impact on our lifespan
  • Improve Memory- sleep can help strengthen memory skills
  • Ward off inflammation- Inflammation is linked to many health issues including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, arthritis and pre-mature aging
  • Ignite creativity- sleep helps to spark creativity
  • Winning – studies show that athletes who get plenty of sleep (at least 10 hours), perform better
  • Improve grades- research has shown that there is a link between adequate amounts of sleep and better grades
  • Improve attention- lack of sleep has been reported to be associated with ADHD like symptoms
  • Burn Fat- people that are more rested appear to lose more fat than people who don’t get enough sleep
  • Lower Stress- people who get enough sleep have lower stress levels
  • Improve Cardiovascular Health- sleep can have a positive effect on blood pressure levels and cholesterol levels
  • Safer Driving- according to the NHTSA, sleep deprivation “ accounted for the highest number of fatal single-car run-off-the-road crashes due to the driver’s performance”
  • Can help to ward of depression – although lack of sleep can not cause depression, if you have am existing medical condition or have personal problems, lack of sleep can make your depression worse

For those of you who think that it’s no big deal if you skimp on sleep, think again. You may be opening yourself up to a slew of physical and emotional issues. So make a conscious decision to go to bed earlier and get a better night’s sleep; your health could depend on it.

Health Benefits of Pet Ownership

Surprising Health Benefits of Pet Ownership

Health Benefits of Pet Ownership

Over 62 % (72.9 million homes) of U.S. households own a pet of some kind. Out of that 62 million, almost half of those families own dogs, with cats coming in second. I have always had pets growing up. Presently, I am the proud mother of a 9 1/2 year old English bulldog named Lulu. Although I have 2 sons, Lulu is the little girl I never had. At times, I really feel as if I had birthed her, just as I did my boys. There is nothing I wouldn’t do for her and from talking to many people over the years; I know many of you feel the same way. We know our pets keep us happy, but did you also know that they provide us with real health benefits?

Pet ownership can provide their owners with mental health benefits as well as physical benefits.  For starters, pets give us unconditional love. As humans, this is something that we crave but can’t always attain. Pets are always there to greet us. They hate to see us go: and they are always there when we could use a little love. We share our deepest thoughts with them and they never threaten to tell. Pets can help to ward off depression and may even lessen anxiety. Petting your dog or cat helps to increase the “feel good” chemicals in your brain. For some, pets even provide a reason to get up some mornings.

Pets, especially dogs, make for great icebreakers. They get you out of your house to meet and greet your neighbors, whether you want to or not. You may not always remember your neighbors’ names, but chances are you’ll remember Lilly, Schooner and Chief. Pets can even help to get some people dates. Go to any dog park and your pet will help you to strike up conversation with just about anyone. How many times have you sat outside at a local eatery and strangers have come up to you to pet your dog or comment on how cute they are? They are real magnets!

Apart from the mental health benefits of pet ownership, there are the physical benefits as well. There is the obvious physical benefit of getting exercise by walking your dog outside. According to the CDC, pet ownership can decrease your blood pressure, cholesterol levels and triglycerides. Studies show that petting your cat or dog can help to reduce blood pressure. Studies have also shown that heart attack patients, who have pets, live longer than those patients who don’t own a pet.

Although the health benefits of pet ownership are undeniable, no one should go out and impulsively buy a pet without serious consideration. Although pets are cute and cuddly, they are also a huge responsibility. So for those of you that have pets, love them like there’s no tomorrow. For those of you that don’t have any, but would like to get one, think about what kind of pet will meet your family’s needs. Most of all, understand that pet ownership is a long-term commitment with enormous rewards.

*We would love to hear from you. We invite you to comment and tell us about your furry friend.

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

Tuesday, March 13th, 2012

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

Colorectal cancer is cancer of the colon and rectum. Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer related deaths in the U.S. The risk of developing colorectal cancer increases with age. More than 90% of people diagnosed with colorectal cancer are age 50 and older.

Most of the time colorectal cancer begins as a polyp in the colon or rectum. If detected early, these polyps can be removed before they develop into cancer. People with polyps usually have no symptoms. For this reason, regular screening is vital. If people over age 50 would get regular screenings, about 60% of deaths from colorectal cancer could be avoided.

There are a few different procedures that can be performed to test for colorectal cancer. You and your doctor can discuss which screening option is best for you. However, the most common forms of screening include a colonoscopy, barium enema, certain types of blood tests and a flexible sigmoidoscopy.

There are certain symptoms that people with colorectal cancer may experience. Below is a list of symptoms that if you do notice, you should schedule an appointment with your doctor right away.

  • Change in stool
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Blood in stool
  • Weakness/fatigue
  • Unexplained weight loss

Although the exact cause of colorectal cancer is unknown, there are some risk factors that can contribute to developing colorectal cancer. Although testing is recommended at age 50, if you have any of these risk factors, you should tell your doctor as he may want you to get tested sooner.

  • Age- people over 50 are at greater risk for developing colorectal cancer
  • Race- African Americans are at greater risk
  • Family history of colorectal cancer
  • Diet- Diets high in red meat or processed meats may contribute to colorectal cancer
  • Physical Inactivity
  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Smoking
  • Heavy alcohol consumption
  • Had prior polyps or had a previous diagnosis of colorectal cancer
  • IBD including Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis
  • Family syndromes- adenomatous polyposis and hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer

In the event that you have been diagnosed with colorectal cancer, your doctor will discuss the appropriate course of action that needs to be taken. Depending on the stage of your cancer, treatment may be one of the following or a combination of them: surgery, chemotherapy or radiation. If the cancer is more advanced, your doctor may want to try certain targeted cancer drugs.

Taking care of your self physically and emotionally will be extremely important in your recovery and quality of life. Be sure to eat healthy foods and get plenty of regular exercise. Surround yourself with family and loved ones and ask for help when you need it.  Your doctor or health care professional will be able to provide you with some great resources for support. There are also many online resources that can help you find the emotional support you need. For more information on colorectal cancer, please visit these websites:

Affordable Health Coverage May be in Your Reach

Find Affordable Health Coverage to Fit Your Needs

Affordable Health Coverage for All

The #1 goal of Medicationcoupons.com is to help people save money on the cost of medication and health related expenses. As an ongoing effort to inform our readers of ways that they can save money, we wanted to share with you low cost health coverage options that you may not be aware of. We hope you enjoy the article and as always, we welcome your comments.

Whatever you want to call them — Health Access Plans, Fixed-Indemnity Plans, Fixed-Benefit Plans, these innovative and cost-effective plans allow you to get routine and emergency care without the high costs of most Major Medical Plans that require pricey premiums, deductibles and copays before they pay anything.  These plans simply pay a set cash amount when you or a member of your family receive services like doctor office visits, hospital stays, x-rays and drug prescriptions.  In addition, most of these plans provide network discounts (even if you exceed your plan limits) on out-of-pocket expenses as well as access to specialists for vision and dental care.

The application process is simple; you just answer a few medical questions and once approved, your benefits begin immediately with no waiting periods. Once you receive proof of coverage you will get access to network discounts, assistance from Patient Care Advocates, benefit payments for services you receive and much more. In cases involving a pre-existing condition, the plan will pay benefits related to that specific condition after you have been insured for 12 consecutive months.  Most of these plans will pay benefits not only for preventive services such as annual exams, immunizations and mammograms, but also for sickness and injury-related accidents.

Advocates are usually available to educate consumers on how to get the most out of their benefits. Health Payment Advocates can help you locate in-network physicians, compare prices and check the quality ratings of doctors and facilities.  They can also help you work through any medical claims or billing issues by negotiating the amount you owe or by creating payment plans with your medical providers.  Advocates will also be able to review your billing statements to make sure they are accurate and do not contain any errors that could cost you hundreds, if not thousands of dollars.

In addition to the benefits already mentioned, these plans usually offer additional benefits to cover inpatient/outpatient surgery, anesthesia, ground and air ambulance services, ER/urgent care, and more.

Please keep in mind that these Fixed-Benefit Plans are not for everyone. People who need coverage for mental health issues, reproductive/fertility concerns or other more complicated needs will want to look into a Major Medical plan.  But for those individuals and families that are looking for health coverage without breaking the bank, there are some options for your needs and budget.
