Colorectal cancer is cancer of the colon and rectum. Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer related deaths in the U.S. The risk of developing colorectal cancer increases with age. More than 90% of people diagnosed with colorectal cancer are age 50 and older.

Most of the time colorectal cancer begins as a polyp in the colon or rectum. If detected early, these polyps can be removed before they develop into cancer. People with polyps usually have no symptoms. For this reason, regular screening is vital. If people over age 50 would get regular screenings, about 60% of deaths from colorectal cancer could be avoided.

There are a few different procedures that can be performed to test for colorectal cancer. You and your doctor can discuss which screening option is best for you. However, the most common forms of screening include a colonoscopy, barium enema, certain types of blood tests and a flexible sigmoidoscopy.

There are certain symptoms that people with colorectal cancer may experience. Below is a list of symptoms that if you do notice, you should schedule an appointment with your doctor right away.

  • Change in stool
  • Abdominal discomfort

  • Weakness/fatigue

Depending on the stage of your cancer, treatment may be one of the following or a combination of them: surgery, chemotherapy or radiation.
