Constipation Information Plus Coupons

Constipation Information + Coupons

Constipation Information

Constipation affects over 4 million Americans and it is one of the most common gastrointestinal problems in the U.S. Everyone at some point in their life has experienced constipation. Constipation occurs because the colon has absorbed too much water resulting in dry stools, or because the stool moves too slowly through the digestive tract causing it to dry and harden.

Constipation can mean different things to different people; this is because everybody’s body is different. Constipation is defined as having less than 3 bowel movements a week; severe constipation is having less than one bowel movement per week. Some people who are constipated simply go days without having a bowel movement, while others have bowel movements but they are dry, hard and difficult to pass.

There are a few different reasons that you could be constipated.  For most people, it is due to their diet and lack of exercise. Below is a list of possible reasons why you may be constipated.

  • You are taking certain medications such as narcotic pain medications, anti-anxiety medications, anticonvulsants and blood pressure medications
  • not consuming enough fiber in the diet
  • lack of exercise
  • not drinking enough liquids
  • laxative abuse
  • ignoring the urge to have a bowel movement which can eventually become a habit
  • hypothyroidism
  • menstruation
  • pregnancy
  • certain diseases or conditions such as Diabetes, Scleroderma, MS, Chagas Disease, stroke

Although constipation can be a common problem, if you experience any of the following symptoms, you should see your doctor immediately. These symptoms can be a sign of a more serious medical problem.

  • rectal bleeding
  • abdominal pain
  • cramping
  • bloating
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • unexplained weight loss

So what can you do to relieve constipation? Well for starters, you should go to the doctor to make sure that there is not an underlying medical condition that is making you constipated. If you are given the “all clear” it’s time to add more fiber to your diet. The recommended daily amount of fiber is 25-35 grams. I know it sounds like a lot but after a while it will seem routine. The first thing you should do is eat more fruits and vegetables. Eating oatmeal and whole wheat products can also be good sources of fiber. I recommend doing some research online as to what foods contain high amounts of fiber naturally. At the supermarket, you should be reading the backs of boxes to check fiber amounts. There are many more foods on the market today that contain large amounts of fiber. A good rule of thumb is to choose items that have at least 3 grams of fiber per serving. Additionally, there are certain brands of popcorn, oatmeal, and fiber snack bars that have 9-13 grams of fiber per serving. You can also find some pastas that have 6 grams of fiber per serving, and believe it or not, they actually taste really good.

Your doctor may suggest that you take some over the counter fiber aids to help move things along. It is important that when you add fiber to your diet that you do it gradually and that you drink lots of water. Adding too much fiber at one time can result in excessive flatulence and bloating.

For relief of occasional constipation, you may choose to try an over the counter product. Below is a list of over the counter constipation remedies that can help. To access a coupon for these medications, simply click on the name of the medication. As always, if you do not see your medication listed, please email us at – we will be more than happy to try and locate a coupon for your medication.

Migraine Information

Over 28 million Americans suffer from migraines. Migraines are extreme headaches characterized by intense throbbing or a pounding sensation in a particular part of the head, such as the temple or behind the eye. Migraines are usually accompanied by nausea, vomiting and light sensitivity. More women than men suffer from migraines. Although the exact cause of migraine headaches is unknown, it is believed that they are caused by changes in the brain and the surrounding blood vessels. Migraines headaches can last anywhere from 4-72 hours.

Migraine headaches are usually confined to one side of the head, but it can be felt on both sides. There are many things that can trigger a migraine. Common migraine triggers include the following:

  • Menstruation
  • Foods with a lot of caffeine or msg
  • Aged cheeses
  • Skipping meals or fasting
  • Stress
  • Too much or too little sleep
  • Warm weather
  • Certain medications
  • Physical activity including sex
  • Alcohol
  • Certain smells

Almost half of migraine sufferers get warning symptoms hours to days before the migraine starts. Some of these migraine warning symptoms include sleepiness, fatigue, crankiness, depression, euphoria and sweet or salty cravings. About 20% of migraine sufferers experience an “aura” before or during the onset of the migraine. Auras can be visual, auditory or both. Visual auras can include flashing patterns, bright lights and spots in the visual field. Auditory auras include hallucinations and change in smell and taste. Genetics and excessive weight seem to cause people to experience migraines with an aura.

There are certain migraine medications that you can take to decrease the severity of the migraine. Below is a list of common migraine medications that may help to ease the pain. Additionally, we have coupons for all of the migraine medications listed below. To access the migraine medication coupons, just click on the medication name.

Menopause: The Next Chapter in a Woman’s Life

Friday, June 1st, 2012

Menopause Information

Menopause refers to the time in a woman’s life when menstruation ends. Menopause does not just happen all at once, it is a gradual process. Menopause becomes official after 12 months of not having your period. The average age of menopause is 51. Menopause is a three part process that consists of perimenopause, menopause and postmenopause.

The time before menopause is called perimenopause.  Perimenopause usually starts about 5-7 years before menopause. During Perimenopause, the ovaries naturally produce less estrogen. It is in the last couple of years of perimenopause when symptoms usually occur. Although not all women will experience menopausal symptoms, many women do. The most common menopausal symptoms include hot flashes, vaginal dryness, moodiness, weight gain, insomnia and irregular periods. If menopausal symptoms get the best of you, there are some things that you can do to ease the severity of your symptoms. Lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking, getting regular exercise and healthier eating habits can all help to ease your menopausal symptoms. Certain medications may also be prescribed to help alleviate menopausal symptoms.

When menopause finally happens, the ovaries stop producing eggs and estrogen. The years after menopause are known as postmenopause. By the time you are in postmenopause, most of the menopausal symptoms have subsided.  Although menopause is a natural process, there are some long term health problems that can occur in postmenopausal women, due to the lack of estrogen. These health problems include osteoporosis, heart disease, lack of skin elasticity, increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease and loss of muscle tone. Your doctor may choose to put you on prescription medications that help to fight bone loss. Additionally, your doctor may also put you on a cholesterol lowering medication to help combat heart disease.

The medications listed below may at some point be prescribed to help ease certain symptoms associated with menopause. has coupons for all of the medications that are listed below.
