Did you know that studies have proven that being in love is actually good for your health? So with Valentine’s Day just days away, here is a list of the top health benefits of being in love. So be sure to shower your Valentine with love and affection, today and every day.

Love Helps to Improve Mental Health- If you’ve had a bad day, having someone to come home to and talk to helps to release the stress of the day. Being in a good relationship helps to ease depression and just makes us happier.

Love Promotes a Healthy Heart- Women who are happily married have a much lower risk of cardiovascular disease than those who are in a stressful marriage. And men who are in happy relationships have less angina and heartburn.

Love Helps to Boost Immune System- Kissing and touching helps to release a certain hormone that heightens the levels of a certain antibody. The result is a stronger immunity against illness or disease.

Love Helps to Promote Longevity- Studies have shown that people who are in long term loving relationships have a longer life span than single people.

Love May Help Ease Pain- Studies have shown that hand holding helps to minimize a woman’s pain.

Love Keeps you Physically Fit- Couples that exercise together are more likely to stick with their workout over time. Plus, when you’re in love with someone you want to look good for them, which will motivate you to keep working out.

Diabetes Awareness

Diabetes Awareness

Diabetes is a disease that is characterized by high glucose levels that result in the body’s inability to properly use or produce insulin. There are 3 different types of diabetes; type 1, type 2 and Gestational diabetes, with type 2 being the most common. More than 29 million Americans have diabetes and more than 8 million people are undiagnosed. Diabetes can be controlled with a proper diet, regular exercise, losing weight and checking blood glucose levels. However most people with this disease will progressively get worse and many patients will need to take insulin. Additionally, as people age, their risk of developing type 2 diabetes increases. This is probably due to people gaining weight and becoming more sedentary as they age.

There are many complications that can arise from not getting your blood sugar under control. These conditions include cardiovascular disease, nerve damage, kidney damage, eye damage, foot damage which could lead to amputation, hearing problems and even Alzheimer’s disease.

Common symptoms of diabetes include excessive thirst, frequent urination, intense hunger, tingling and numbness in hands and feet, wounds that won’t heal, blurry vision and an increase in yeast infections. Women with diabetes are more prone to bladder and vaginal infections and men often experience sexual dysfunction.

So what can you do to control your diabetes?

  • Lose 10 pounds- this is an achievable goal which can greatly impact your glucose levels.
  • Get more exercise- walk, swim, take the stairs instead of an elevator
  • Quit smoking- smoking makes diabetes harder to control
  • Relax/ Rid yourself of stress – meditate, practice yoga, go for a walk
  • Monitor your blood glucose levels- do this throughout the day so you can see how the changes you’ve made are making a difference and what you may need to do more of to help.

Finding Time to Exercise and Stay Fit!

Exercising at Home

Get Fit in Your Home!

You know how important eating right and exercising is. But with our busy lives, sometimes there’s just not enough hours in the day to make it in. Or maybe you just don’t want to make the time to hit the gym, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t find time to sneak in some exercise moves wherever you are and whenever you can.

One of the things that I love to do is house walking. I know it sounds crazy but it works. Just get up and walk or jog around your house. You don’t have to worry about how you look (no one will ever see you) and you don’t have to worry about what the weather is outside. It’s an easy way to reach 10,000 steps and depending on how quickly you’re moving, it can be a good cardio workout.

Another thing I like to do is pushups against a counter or wall. I admit I am not good at traditional pushups, but this kind is easier and I still feel some pain the next day, so I know it’s working. Do 3 sets of 20-30 and you’re good.

Another exercise you can do is lunges. When you’re walking around your house from one room to another, do lunges. Again, it’s an easy way to sneak in exercise- you can even do it at work too.

Dancing is also a great exercise. Even if you’re not going to the club, put on your favorite song and dance to it. Chances are it’s between 3- 5 minutes long. Then that song is over, put on another one and so on. Before you know it, you’ve been moving for about 15 -20 minutes and you’ve been having fun at the same time.

Whatever exercise you like to do, do it. The gym isn’t for everybody but there are ways that you can keep yourself fit and healthy in the comfort of your own home.

Allergy Medication Coupons

Save Money on Your Allergy Medicines!

Once again, this year’s allergy season is expected to be a bad one. One main reason for this is due to the longer than usual cold winter. When cold weather lasts into spring, it delays some trees from pollenating. Then, when it does finally start to warm up, all of the trees start pollenating at once.

There are some things that you can do to minimize your exposure to pollen. Keep an eye on the pollen count and avoid going outdoors for extended periods of time when it is high. If you do choose to be outdoors, make sure you change your clothes, shower and wash your hair when you get back inside. Keep your windows in your home and car closed and run you’re a/c. And be sure to take your allergy medications as directed by your doctor.

  • Wear protective clothing
  • Wear a large brimmed hat

Acne is the most common skin condition in the United States. This condition is caused by an excess production of oil in the sebaceous glands. It is a skin condition that causes pimples including black heads, white heads, papules, pustules, nobules and cysts. When the pores on your body become clogged, pimples start to form. Although acne usually affects teenagers, anyone of any age can suffer from it.

Although the exact cause of acne is not known, there is evidence that supports that genetics, hormones, cosmetics, physical activity and stress may all contribute to it. There may also be a link between pimples and dairy foods and refined sugars.

If you or your child has acne, you will probably want to see a dermatologist. Depending on the severity of your condition, this will dictate if and what type of medication you will be prescribed.
