Living With COPD

COPD, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, is one of the most common lung diseases known today, that includes both chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Early diagnosis of COPD is vital so that you can start to get the care you need. It is estimated that 12 million people have COPD and another 12 million have it but, have not yet been diagnosed.  Many people are unaware that they have COPD and chalk it up to aging and smoker’s cough. If this sounds familiar, it would be a good idea to make an appointment with your doctor for peace of mind. A relatively easy test called Spirometry can be performed to determine whether or not you have COPD.

Smoking is the leading cause of COPD, but not everyone that smokes develops this disease. Other causes that may lead to the development of COPD are exposure to a particular kind of chemical, gas or fume; secondhand smoke; excessive pollution and in rare cases it can be caused by a lack of a certain protein in the body.

COPD develops slowly and most of its symptoms aren’t experienced until major lung damage has already happened. For this reason, many people do not know that they are sick until it is too late. The most common symptoms of COPD include coughing, coughing up mucus, fatigue, shortness of breath, trouble catching your breath and wheezing. Many people with COPD experience a few different symptoms at the same time.

COPD can cause other health problems including respiratory infections, high blood pressure, heart problems and depression. Many people with COPD will likely get colds and the flu more often. For anyone who has COPD, any respiratory infection will make it even harder to breathe and cause further damage to the lung tissue. High blood pressure can occur in the arteries that carry blood to your lungs. COPD increases the chances of someone having a heart attack. Depression can occur because people with COPD usually have trouble eating and sleeping. Additionally, people diagnosed with COPD will have to limit or even eliminate certain activities that they once enjoyed.

Although there is no cure for COPD, there are things that you can do to relieve the symptoms and keep it under control. As soon as someone is diagnosed with COPD, they must stop smoking. This is the single best way to slow down lung damage. COPD can also be controlled by certain medications including inhalers, inhaled steroids and anti-inflammatory medications. COPD medications tend to allow patients to breathe easier. Medications that are prescribed to treat symptoms of COPD include Advair Diskus, Brovana, Singulair, Symbicort and Daliresp. If you would like to get a coupon for these particular medications, please click on the name of the medication.  Additionally, there are many COPD support groups around the country. If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with COPD, a good resource is the COPD Foundation.
